Coaching at the Cardiff Barrage November 2011

The Sea Angling coaches recieved an application for coaching from a group of mothers and thier children to spend a day sea fishing.

Niether of them had ever tried this type of fishing before so the application came as a bit of suprise.

With tackle kindly donated by the environment agency we offered them the opportunity.

The day started meeting at 0900 at the bay, we got to know the children and parents to break the ice we asked questions about them and what thier interest's were and has anyone caught a fish before.

The weather was not the kindest in the world as it remained overcast all day with a brisk SE wind which at this venue is straigt in your face.

Did it put them off?  not likely all were as keen as mustard.

All adults and children caught fish with Whiting the most popular catch of the day.

A chap fishing to our right managed to catch a Dogfish and, when we mentioned that this was indeed a small Shark they could not wait to get a look and feel the skin of the fish, the party were amazed at how rough the skin was on this fish.  it was then retuned to the sea.

The session ended and the party left with a great deal of satisfaction and made enquiries about another session in the new year.

S4C Open day at Bryn Bach Park

Angling Cymru (The FWA) was invited to attend an Open Day at Bryn Bach Park Tredegar arranged by S4C  to promote the various types of angling that are available to the residents and visitors to Wales.

Julian lewis Jones the presenter of Sigota the S4C Welsh fishing program was on hand to answer any questions along with Rhys Llewellyn.  An item that proved a great hit was the Fighting Chair where you could match your skills to either of the really big game fish from all over the world, the Blue Marlin proved a big hit.

There were Angling Cymru coaches there from all disciplines, Coarse Game and Sea to help promote the angling opportunities in Wales.

On the Coarse side Pole alley was again a bid draw with children of all ages having a go at getting 10 balls in a bucket in the quickest time.  There were also demonstrations on how to put a rod and reel together and set up a float outfit with the right weights to get the float to sit right in the water.

The Sea Anglers were there to demonstrate various types of casting with a good selection of their own rods from fix spool to multiplier and baitcaster. This proved a huge success with kids trying to beat their fathers and wives trying to do the same. It was amazing to see just what could be achieved with a little help

The Game section were involved with giving the visitors a go at Fly fishing which proved that this is not as easy as it looks and several of them catching themselves, all in all a goodtime.

As always Pole Alley proved a great sucess.

Your never to young to start.

 Size does not matter either.

Outdoor Action show 19th and 20th June 2010

This years Outdoor Action show took place at the White Water centre at the Cardiff Bay.

The coarse fishing proved to be the most popular attraction.

The face of concentration

Even the girls took it seriously.

All the youngsters caught fish

And the effort paid off.

As you can see from all the pictures it turned out to be a great two days with over 70 children and adults taking up the offer of the 1 hour taster sessions, the main fish caught were Rudd and some good size fish close to 1 lb came to the nets.

The weather could not have been better with wall to wall sunshine for the two days.

Cardiff Bay, June 19th, 20th and 21st 2009.

The Cardiff Bay Outdoor Action show took place on the 19th, 20th and 21st June, the added attraction this year was the chance to try the fishing in the bay from a floating pontoon supplied by the harbour authority.  All that queued for a place for the fishing were delighted with over 300 fish caught during the event.  The Federation of Welsh Anglers coaches present were all working overtime to keep up with the demand for the angling places available.
Mothers, fathers and there children had a whale of a time catching fish (pardon the pun) and to cap it all off the participants in the angling were rewarded with Roach up to 1 ½ lbs along with Chubb Rudd Skimmer Bream and Mullet up to 2 ½ lbs all these fish were in prime condition and all fought hard as most fish had never been caught before.   During the event we saw in excess of 120 potential anglers try there hand at angling some for the first time, and not one angler went away disappointed
as all that tried it caught fish some with a grin larger than others.

Sea anling coaches were also prominent, providing demonsartions on rig-making, giving advice and information on the best fishing marks and reinforcing their expertise and advice with some excellent instructional DVDs on sea fishing for visitors to view.

Another new demonstration that drew in the visitors this year was the fly tying which was again demonstrated by FWA coaches to a very high standard.  The colours and materials that were on display were really something to be believed, and although they made it look easy the anglers who tried it soon realised that like all skills there is a right way and a wrong way to do it but with assistance from the coaches they were soon making their own flies.
Cardiff City Council, through the Harbour Authority, will shortly be opening the Bay for fishing to the public, we’ll let you know when and where to get your permits from. Early signs are that anglers could be in for a bonanza, with a big head of coarse fish and a few sea species like mullet and flat fish showing in some numbers. There are even some trout and grayling to add that extra interest.
