Profile of a Young Angler
Lucy Worrall...
I am 8 years old and fish with the Aber Sea Fishing Academy. I like sea fishing best and have been fishing since I was four years old. I started fishing because my Mum and Dad fish and I want to fish for Wales like my Mum. I have managed to cast 35 yards and the best fish I have ever caught was Flounder 1lb Shore Black Bream 1lb 3oz Boat 4oz. Flounder is may favourite fish to fish for and my best place is Aberystwyth Harbour.
I like horse riding as well and if I have one tip for any other young anglers its to not let your Disability stop you from reaching your goal in life.
Kieron Jenkins...
I am 15 and have been fishing since I was 7. I am from Abercynon and fish with Thorn, Merthyr AC and Islwyn and District Clubs. I started fishing because my Dad took me along initially and my interest grew from that. I have won flytying competitions since age 9 and first qualified for the youth team in 2002. I have competed in Commonwealth competitions and fished for the World Youth team and captained the youth Welsh team as well as establishing a new Commonwealth record for 19 fish in two hours in 2006. My best fish are an 11lb Brown trout caught from river Test, & 10lb 13oz Brown trout caught from Llyn Brenig and my favourite fish to fish for are grayling and Brown Trout. My favourite spot to fish is anywhere along a river! If I had to pass on a tip to other young anglers its to get out fishing as much as possible. I would like to win some major competitions and become World Champion and as well as fishing I enjoy fly tying.

Matthew Powell…
Age 17 years, born 11th September 1991. I started fishing at Buckley Angling Association at the age of 7, winning the under 12’s junior cup that year, retaining for five years. I then was promoted to the twelve and over’s and again was returned the Buckley Champion for the next three years, 2004 to 2006inc. Also winning the Paddy Farrell Junior Cup 2005/6.
I have taken a bronze and silver medal in the Junior Welsh National yrs 2004/5.
My greatest accolade to date was being selected to represent Junior Team Wales at the 2006 World Championships in Portugal. Day one saw me lose my only fish of the day a small sunfish, however, day two and a better draw saw me on a section with fish and returned fourth section, fourth place, 54th world ranked (over the two days).
My top tip,
At Buckley I opt to fish shallow on the long pole to connect with the roach, in abundance on the water. I fish a Maver 3 x 7 float, I have six which are highly treasured as Maver don’t do them anymore. I fish at 2-3feet deep on the sliding float with two no 11’s down the line and 1 above the float, with the float running between the two for a set 12inches (300mm), shot to shot. The rig is made from .09micron Pro Line with a size 18 Turbatini 801 to finish off the rig. This is a finer wire hook than the 808, however, springier and more forgiving when fishing for roach. I generally fish a small piece of worm (which can be used for several fish), and constantly drip feed in caster with a very small amount of chopped worm.
My best weight at Buckley was fishing this method, which saw me set a new junior record of 24lb 12oz of roach and bream shallow off peg 14 in a 3hr evening match.
